Music for the Road

Karen Lynn Gorney would forever have a place in the hearts of pop culture fans if for no other reason than her brilliant performance as "Stephanie," John Travolta's stylish and strong-willed dance partner in the mega-hit movie Saturday Night Fever. But Karen Lynn (whose father Jay wrote the Great Depression-era anthem, "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?") has deep musical roots as well. In her album Used To Love You Madly, this stage veteran and former All My Children star explores the many sides of love and loss, using styles ranging from jass ballad to jangly folk to '70s funk. The 12 songs (all originals by Karen Lynn except "You're My Thrill," which was written by Jay), are a mix of studio and live recordings. Standout cuts include the shimmering, guitar-driven "Looking Back," the rockin' blues tune "Heartbreak Sam," and the gentle, bossa nova ballad "Saw Your Face," whose lyrics ask the karmic question, "Did I want you, baby? Did I dream you? I guess I always knew I'd see your face." To order a CD, contact Karen Company, P.O.
